Mark 9:27-29 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
Jesus was frustrated with the lack of faith around him at various times in his ministry. His disciples seemed to come up lacking when Jesus thought they had seen enough, learned enough, and experienced enough to really get it. I can identify with the disciples. I have been hanging around with Jesus for quite some time now. I have seen what he can accomplish in peoples lives, some bordering on the miraculous, but numerous effects that only God could accomplish, and I have personally experienced God directing me and using me as a means to effect others through his Spirit. Having said all that I know I still sometimes lack the faith that God expects me to have by now.
How often do we pray with real faith? I read scriptures like this one and I know Jesus would be frustrated with me as well. We limit what God can accomplish only because He will not overcome our free will, and we choose to limit his effectiveness by insisting to hold onto our own control.
