Mark 9:7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”
At bible study a couple of weeks ago we were taking about who Jesus was. What was his identity, and perhaps more important what did Jesus call himself? The people were looking for the coming of the Messiah and Jesus appeared to distance himself from this at times. Why? The people thought Messiah or annointed one was coming to re-establish the Davidic kingdom. He would have to overthrow the Roman Empire in order to accomplish that. The people were looking for an earthly king and Jesus knew that was not God's plan. In this scripture the voice from heaven say "This is my beloved son". Jesus reference to himself was the title from Daniel os "Son of Man". Son of God and Son of Man isn't that interesting. We say Jesus is fully God and fully human. He stands in history in the middle ground that connects us to God. The voice from heaven tells the disciples to listen to him. As the Son of Man he will reveal to us the will and nature of God up close and personal.
Jesus role has not changed, he is forever Son of God, Son of Man, and stands to reveal God's will and nature to us. Our role hasn't changed either. We are to listen to him. Once again last night in my small group the question was asked "How do we listen to God?" I know at some point I began to listen to God and He has continued to be willing to speak to me. I can't tell you why I didn't hear his voice before or what obstacle was removed that allowed me to hear him, I can only tell you he wants us to listen and he will speak.
