Seeing With God's Values

John 6:27-29 Do not labor for the food which perishesbut for the food which endures to eternal lifewhich the Son of man will give to youfor on him has God the Father set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we doto be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered themThis is the work of Godthat you believe in him whom he has sent.”

We tend to work so very hard for those things that perish. Some of those things are even the exact things that God desires, but too often they are not the things that please God. Cars, stocks, houses, hobbies, looks, all fall in those arenas.  I'm not sure most of us even think about what is pleasing to God as we pursue our every day life. I think we have world view glasses and God view glasses, and we switch them back and forth depending on where we are involved at the moment. Going to church, switch glasses, back to work or free time, switch glasses. Each set allows us to operate by the prevailing value set in that environment.

God wants only one set of glasses and let everything else be directed by that set of values. "Seek first the kingdom of God (God's values) and all the other things will fall into place. Jesus said those paraphrased words, and the passage for today says we  we do "God's work if we believe in Him whom he sent."

When I give myself completely to the work of God through the church I think I have the right focus, when I sought to grow in my ability to love my wife and family I think I've shown the right focus, I play a lot of golf now and I'm not sure that is the right focus. I continue to examine my life in term of the values of Jesus Christ, and to seek first his values in all things. Like so many others I do that imperfectly, but I hope I'm following the master.
