John 14:5- Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Among the verses in scripture that a person might know by heart, this passage contains one of them. Certainly you can't read this quotation of Jesus and think he did not understand that he held a unique position in human history. In my opinion he is saying that he is the one and only ransom price for the sins of the whole world. God could not be just, justice requires consequences for bad choices, and simply accept us back into full relationship with him. Jesus was precious enough to his Father that when he chose to offer himself as the just sacrifice, he became the source of life for us, he became the way for us to be made right with his father, and he is the one to send the Holy Spirit to us (the Spirit of truth) after we are made right with God.
This quote is also a battleground for some. Those who hold very strongly to the all roads lead to heaven belief system struggle or even rebel at language like this. Some of those people are even ordained leaders in our church. It therefor is an important place to make some important decisions. Do I have the right to pick and choose which words of Jesus I accept? Can he be my Lord and Savior and have me reject things he said or taught? Who is this Jesus, a guy like me that you can take or leave, or the Son of God a unique linch pin of history? Each of us must and will decide, even ignoring him is a decision.
