Matthew 6:16-18 And when you fastdo not look dismallike the hypocrites,for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by menTrulyI say to youthey have received their rewardBut when you fastanoint your head and wash your facethat your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secretand your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

My life with Christ has always wrestled with a puzzle, it involves need for witness and testimony while we risk the danger of pride. I have practiced the discipline of fasting for many years. I have also witnessed to others the spiritual benefits of fasting. When fasting I do try to do so without drawing attention to myself, and at times that has been challenging. I have been in social situations with others when they are gathering to dine and I am fasting. I have on those occasions let people know that I am in the middle of a fast. My witness about fasting focuses on the scriptural statements that include the notion, "When you fast." I think fasting is a direct link between the physical and the spiritual. Bodily sacrifice leads to spiritual growth like fertilizer greens the lawn. The reward for fasting without making a show of it is the growth in your relationship with God the Holy Trinity.

We soon enter into Lent and fasting was always a deep part of this renewal season. Giving up coffee or chocolate or sweets does not create the same spiritual focus that a real fast produces. The last section of the gospel which was used yesterday included that section on prayer. Prayer and fasting are the two deep activities of Lent. Let the season begin.
